Glennallen, Copper River Valley and Wrangell-St.Elias

The Copper River (Ahtna River), the 10th largest river in the United States by discharge volume, flows 290 miles from its source at the Copper Glacier on the northeast side of Mount Wrangell and drains a large region of the Wrangell Mountains and Chugach Mountains. It is known for its extensive delta system, nearly fifty miles wide, and prolific runs of wild salmon. The upper river has abundant copper deposits. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve was established in 1980. It is the largest national park and preserve area in the US, more than twenty thousand square miles. Mount Wrangell is a massive shield volcano. At 14163' it rises more than 12000' above the Copper River.
